About Powys County Council

Powys forms the very heart of Wales protected by the Brecon Beacons National Park in the south, the Cambrian Mountains to the west and Radnor Forest to the north-east. The development of tourism has played an important role in the regeneration of the area with unique attractions such as the Centre for Alternative Technology, Celtica, the Judge's lodging in Presteigne, Offa's Dyke Centre in Knighton, the annual Royal Welsh Show and the Dan-yr-Ogof Showcaves. The county offers a region of diverse interests and great recreational value including ancient castles and earthworks, historic churches and mansions, museums and art galleries and sporting opportunities.

Agriculture is still the most important form of employment with small hill farms run on a family basis forming the most common agricultural unit. There has been recent growth in the amount of industry in the county. Over a million square feet of factory floor space has been built over the past twenty years.
