About City of York Council
The City of York has a rich history stretching back nearly 2000 years; George VI once said that: 'The history of York is the history of England'. York has a wealth of heritage and history. York attracts over four million visitors a year and popular destinations include York Minster, which is the largest Gothic cathedral in Europe, the Castle Museum, the National Railway Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre. Tourism is an important industry in York and the city also has a thriving bioscience, technology and research sector, centred on the City's Science Park. Other major employers include Nestle, City of York Council and York Hospitals NHS Trust. York has excellent transport links, being on the East Coast Mainline and close to the A1M. From York seaside resorts such as Scarborough, Whitby and Filey or the North York Moors National Park are a short journey by road or rail.
