A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, poised for transformation with the construction of an airport due to be operational this spring. This is an exciting and challenging time for the development of Social Services on the island.

As you manage your own caseload of complex cases you will take appropriate action to protect vulnerable people, with an emphasis on anti-oppressive practice. You must devise, monitor and review individual care plans based on assessed needs and risks that take account of diversity to maintain and improve their quality of life, promote dignity and empowerment and comply with legal and statutory requirements.

You will assess children in need and undertake risk assessments to inform care planning. You must ensure that procedures for managing risk of significant harm are followed at all times. Playing a leading role in improving practice and quality of assessments and care planning within the team by mentoring assigned social work staff, you will lead team meeting discussions and workshops, updating them on practice developments and research findings and induction of new staff. You will also convene and chair multi-agency and planning meetings to implement the Family Group Conferencing process.

Working in partnership with other services units including older persons and residential units, you will liaise with key agencies such as Mental Health, Health, Schools, Police and Probation. Challenging poor practice at all times you will prepare reports and statements for court, case conferences and looked-after reviews.

A UK Qualified Social Worker CQSW or DipSW or equivalent, you must be registered with the HCPC or equivalent. Experienced in social work with special focus on safeguarding children and adults, you must have up to date knowledge and recent practical experience of working as a social worker with caseload responsibility in safeguarding vulnerable groups. It is desirable that you have therapeutic experience such as Theraplay or other approaches. You will also need a full UK Driving Licence and may be required to work evenings, weekends and occasional public holidays and participate in the on call duty rota.
