Occupational Therapist

St Helena, South Atlantic
1 Year FTC

Competitive package circa £52k pa, includes salary, pension contribution, cost of living, relocation, rent and utilities (see Overseas Vacancy Information).

A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,000, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, poised for transformation with the imminent construction of an airport.

With the help of a locally trained assistant you will offer the full spectrum of Occupational Therapy, with particular emphasis on the disabled and vulnerable living in the community and in residential care. Delivering training programmes for care staff and community carers on the island, you will improve community-based rehabilitation services and contribute to the island’s disability policy, developing practice and protocols for the transition into work and future development of OT recipients. You will also create OT programmes for residential care homes.

As you develop community-based OT services you will offer technical support to colleagues and advise on developments to support the disabled in their homes, networking to improve rehabilitation services. Developing day-care programmes for the elderly and disabled you will coordinate and implement training events and workshops for community based carers, building a team of well trained staff and volunteers. You will also share learning and networking with the wider health sector, other organisations and the community.

You must of course keep up to date with developments in OT, applying evidence-based practice and maintaining records on the EMIS system. Controlling supplies and materials within the unit you will improve the system to monitor equipment out on loan.

Sufficiently confident in your professional knowledge to work as an autonomous practitioner, you will have strong interpersonal skills, good oral and written communication and a positive, motivational personality, able to improvise using available resources. You must be a qualified and registered Occupational Therapist, preferably holding a Masters in OT. Experienced in mental health therapies and in managing and developing community-based rehabilitation services, you will already have trained OT staff and carers. A valid driving licence is required.

We offer an extensive benefits package with 20 days leave pa, fare paid travel, freight, transport and storage allowances.
