Job role
Head of Service
Contract Type
Full time

As one of the biggest councils in the country, with a proud tradition of delivering quality services and stable leadership, Durham County Council is facing the future with confidence. We have recently appointed a new Corporate Director for Children and Young People and we are now looking to recruit to this key senior post, which leads the development and delivery of services for looked after children, residential services, fostering and adoption, and care leavers.

Durham has a strong commitment to supporting our looked after children and young people; some of our services - such as our in house residential care – are very strong, and we have recently set up an exciting adoption partnership with several other authorities. However, we also need to develop a better council wide offer for care leavers, establish a stronger corporate parenting ethos, manage demand more effectively, and expand our provision within the County.

We are therefore looking for candidates with a strong understanding of good social work practice and a determination to champion the needs and improve the outcomes of looked after children and care leavers. You will need to work corporately as well as play a major role in our improvement journey – and this will include shaping the design and structure of your services as we seek to become an outstanding directorate.
