The communities of West Sussex enjoy some of the best qualities of life but significant demographic and economic challenges provide some of the biggest challenges anywhere in the country. With a population of over 800,000, West Sussex has

• 34% of under 5’s living in poverty with three of our most deprived wards becoming relatively more deprived since 2010.

• 30% of year 6 pupils measured as having excess weight.

• A 36% projected increase in obesity in over 65’s.

• A 60% projected increase of those people living with dementia by 2030.

• A 67% increase in demand across all types of care from 2014 to 2034.

• An aging population with fewer working aged residents as a proportion of population.

In order to respond to the challenges we face we require a new outlook for our Public Health services and outcomes focussed on the best start in life, building a prosperous economy and independence for longer later in life. To achieve this, we have a clear focus on strong community and partner relationships with a clear and unequivocal focus on outcomes.

We are seeking a Director of Public Health to join our new Corporate Leadership Team who has an appetite for change and a desire to make a real and positive difference to the lives of our residents. To be successful in this role you will need to be a clear leader and passionate about the agenda of West Sussex, you will be able to clearly demonstrate a high level of tact and diplomacy as well as an ability to advise and challenge in order to bring about change across a multiple partnership environment. You will have a proven track record in resolving complex health problems and a detailed understanding of how to approach health inequalities and working with the wider determinants of health, in order to support health improvement against a background of reducing budgets and increasing pressure on services.

The Public Health role is vital to the aims and ambitions for our communities in West Sussex. This role will report directly to the Chief Executive and work closely with our political leadership, Executive team and our Partners to help to improve the health and wellbeing of our local communities. This role will work across our County Council and Partnerships to ensure our developing programmes of prevention and independence are aligned and evidenced, based on an understanding of local need and the challenges faced by our local communities.
