Milton Keynes Council is a great place to work. We’re celebrating our 50th birthday this year and are one of the fastest growing places in the country and are now about the size of a large outer London Borough and just as diverse. Our transport links are excellent and our economy is booming.

Schools have improved hugely and 93% are now judged good or better. There is considerable disadvantage however and other difficult local issues, including homelessness, which we are working on addressing. We have a joint adult and children’s services directorate and work increasingly closely with health.

Our children’s senior team is experienced and effective. Political relationships are good, and we have just launched a whole new approach to partnership working called MK Together we are one of the first areas in England to have created a single safeguarding board. We have an established social work model of practice called the Family Support Approach, have successfully embedded Signs of Safety and have core funded our Family Drug and Alcohol Court (FDAC).

We continue to invest heavily in support and prevention and have a real commitment to community based services. Our most recent inspection of children in need of help and protection, children looked after and care leavers took place in 2016 and whilst we ‘require improvement to be good’, Ofsted recognised many positive features.

Following the retirement of the current post holder, we are looking to appoint to this key role within the People Directorate which carries professional responsibility for children’s social care as well as leadership for other areas, including special educational needs and disability.

This is an exciting time for us as we continue to see the benefits of bringing adult and children’s together and work collaboratively on a programme to further improve the quality and impact of our services following our inspection. Reporting directly to the Corporate Director – People, this broad role would be ideal for someone who is an aspirant DCS.
