Chief Executive

Chief Executive
East Hertfordshire District Council
Salary up to £120,000

East Herts has a lot to offer. We are consistently rated as amongst the best areas in the country to live, with excellent schools, a huge array of green space, beautiful waterways, unique market towns and picturesque villages.

We also enjoy high levels of employment and a diverse local economy, with the added benefit of being close to London and Cambridge and with good access to Stansted and Luton airports. We are right in the middle of the UK Innovation Zone – Britain’s fastest growing region.

There are however challenges. The largely rural nature of the district can leave some people feeling isolated, with limited access to technology improvements and public transport. Growth can be threatening to existing communities and in an area where congestion and air quality cause very real concerns, this isn’t surprising. People struggle to afford a home in an area of very high house prices. We support our aging population with an active wellbeing programme centred around prevention, but social isolation in older people is a real issue.

But with these challenges come opportunities, and at East Herts we are a ‘glass half full’ council. In fact, we are often a ‘glass-overflowing’ council! We have built strong partnerships over the last few years, and work tirelessly as members and officers to deliver high quality services, ‘good’ growth, and a hugely exciting capital programme including a bold town centre scheme. We have committed to build two leisure centres, extend and refurbish our very successful theatre, work with partners to deliver one of the largest garden towns in the country, and pilot a number of exciting economic development and health projects.

We innovate. We aren’t afraid to make mistakes, admit things didn’t work and move on to find things that do work.

You’ll be determined. You’ll be dedicated. You’ll have the ability to drive change and improvements, and shape a high-performing culture. More than anything, you’ll be passionate about making your mark on an organisation that punches well above its weight.

If you think you’d like to lead our team then we’d love to hear from you.
