It’s a really exciting time to be thinking about joining us. We are currently in the middle of a multi-million-pound transformation programme to create a more modern Inspectorate and the successful candidate will have a vital role to play in helping us to design and develop our organisation.

Our modernised approach will see brand new processes and new technologies being implemented which will change the way our customers interact with us and how our people work. We want our colleagues to be able to work more flexibly and more collaboratively, exploring new and innovative ways to improve the way we provide services.

The Planning Inspectorate has a long and proud history in ensuring a fair planning system by acting as the main appellate body for planning decisions in England and Wales. The work we do has a significant impact on the economy, people’s lives and the communities that they live in; whether that is considering an appeal for a housing extension, providing support to Local Authorities on Local Plans or providing recommendations to the Secretary of State on power stations, or airport expansions such as Heathrow.

The Strategy Directorate is a new directorate which brings together some existing functions but will also create and develop new capabilities for the Inspectorate. We are currently facing a number of challenges; increasing and unpredictable demand for our services, a shortage of professional planners in the labour market, an increasingly complex planning environment, alongside wanting to meet changing customer expectations and government targets. In order to respond to these challenges it is vital that we are looking ahead and using information effectively to develop our longer term strategies and ensure that the Inspectorate’s commitment to quality decisions and professionalism continues.

The Director of Strategy will provide leadership for a number of functions including; horizon scanning, knowledge management, communications, customer insight and our change capability, as well as providing leadership for the Planning Inspector Profession.

As a member of the Planning Inspectorate’s Executive Team, you will work collaboratively and play a significant role in shaping the strategic direction of the organisation. In the first year you will also be pivotal in helping to shape the organisational design, development and culture of PINS.

It is essential that you have a background in planning and understand the planning system. You will also know how to inspire and empower your teams with energy and enthusiasm, while learning from their deep expertise. You will understand how to nurture and develop talent, and will want to promote an environment of collaboration, coaching, mentoring and inclusivity.
