Head of Service

Full time

Dstl is responsible for designing, developing and applying the very latest in science and technology for the benefit of UK defence and security, across government. In our work, we partner with other brilliant people – collaborating with everyone from small companies and world-class universities, to large defence organisations and other nations. Together, we develop cutting-edge technologies, based on deep and widespread research.

As Division Head of Platform Systems, you’ll have a key, senior role. The Division provides a single focus for platform-based capability, covering all mission and weapon systems. The 850-strong team advises and supports a broad range of technical areas with strategically important programmes of work, including Air, Land and Maritime Strategic Systems, Electro-Magnetic Protection and Complex Weapons. Your task is to lead the entire Division to deliver critical Science & Technology (S&T) to a range of major defence customers. It’s a unique opportunity to be instrumental in the development of future military technology.

We’ll look to you to set the Division’s strategic direction and inspire the team with your vision. A highly visible figure, you’ll create an environment where people feel engaged and able to excel. You’ll also manage programme and project delivery, while developing Dstl policies. A member of the Executive Management Committee, you’ll work closely with the Executive on corporate strategies. With responsibility for the Division’s Business Unit Agreement and supplier relationships too, you’ll be right at the heart of Dstl’s success, now and in the future.

A good understanding of the Defence and Security landscape is crucial in this role. You should also appreciate the Science and Technology disciplines needed to deliver capability and programmes. In addition, you’ll need expert leadership skills and a good track record in people management. It’s important that you can manage relationships with contacts at all levels. Beyond this, you’ll need experience of strategic change and business transformation. A natural teamworker, you’ll always see the bigger picture. A formal business qualification (e.g. an MBA) would be an advantage but isn’t essential.

Closing date: 20th January 2019
