Assistant Director: Culture

Employer
Reading Borough Council
Location
Reading, Berkshire
Salary
Up to £92k
Closing date
13 May 2019

Recently named the second-fastest growing city in the UK, and already a regional powerhouse, Reading’s forward momentum is remarkable. High employment levels, a well-qualified local population, and an established and respected university all contribute to Reading’s appeal to inward investors. The Council is playing a central role in creating the right environment for growth and ensuring that benefits are reinvested to support financial sustainability and effectively dispersed to address inequality.

Team Reading is central to this making this happen – assembling a new management team across a range of services, to create consistently high expectations, shared corporate accountability and an unswerving focus on high quality services. We have already delivered £26m of savings, stabilised our revenue budget and have a £0.5bn capital programme to invest in Reading’s future. We’re redefining how the Council delivers, influences and brokers on behalf of our community. For those who want to be at the vanguard of modern local government: Reading is where it’s happening.

Great places are about much more than physical attributes and connectivity. Communities thrive when cultural development and diversity is central to a town’s identity. We see a compelling cultural offer as an intrinsic part of our place shaping agenda. Our Assistant Director: Culture will take the lead on a portfolio that includes Libraries, Arts & Venues, Leisure, Museums, Archives and Adult Education. You will also have a key role in working with Reading UK CIC, ensuring Reading’s cultural offer is central to our economic development agenda. The Council is making considerable investments in our Leisure facilities, with two new centres under development so you’ll play a central role in ensuring these deliver maximum benefits to our community.

We expect that you’ll already have a track record in developing cultural and leisure services in an urban setting, and that you can work across a range of partnerships to connect cultural and leisure activities to our broader corporate ambitions for Reading. You’ll need to offer a well-informed appreciation of how cultural and leisure services can support a broad range of issues, from wellbeing and health to economic growth and place marketing. As part of Team Reading you’ll have the opportunity to contribute across our place and people agenda – this is a role where you can really make your mark.
