The Role

In Bexley we are committed to recruiting and developing newly qualified social workers to help them become competent, capable, relationship based, solution focused, and risk-sensible practitioners.

We are now recruiting the eighth cohort of our NQSW Academy and, if successful, you can expect to join us in September 2019.

In your first year of employment you will be appointed as a Newly Qualified Children’s Social Worker within the NQSW Academy where you will be supported by our Academy Team. The role of the Academy Team is to provide students, NQSWs, social workers, and frontline managers with the tools, support, and training they need to deliver outstanding services to our children and families.

You will receive a comprehensive 2 week induction which will include training sessions, shadowing teams, and visiting a variety of services provided to local families; during this time, you will not be case holding.  Once you move into your team, your caseload will build up in number and complexity over the year to 16 children/young people; NQSWs will be placed in all teams across Children’s Social Care. Whilst in the Academy, you will be completing your ASYE portfolio, have professional supervision, and participate in learning and developing workshops. Assessment reviews will be undertaken at months 3, 6, 9 & 11. In addition to your line manager, you will be allocated a Practice Educator who will provide 1:1 support and supervision over the year.  Your practice educator and line manager will work together to support and assess you and your practice.  We will work with you to develop your career progression pathway.

“Bexley is a safe and supportive place to work with highly creative work undertaken by a skilled and well supported workforce” – Ofsted 2018

The Council, its staff and partners, were delighted in August 2018 when Ofsted judged the overall effectiveness of children’s social care services to be ‘outstanding’!  We were especially pleased that our investment in frontline practitioners and managers was recognised. We have been working for three years to create an environment where social workers can do the work they came into the profession to do - to support and help families to stay together where this is in children’s best interests and it is safe enough for this to happen.

Ofsted judged that we provide strong management oversight of practice, that we have a well – embedded practice framework to enable meaningful family focused help, that we offer clear progress in career pathways, a talent management scheme and a nurturing environment to enable social work to flourish. We believe deeply in relationship based practice and ‘Signs of Safety’ is the vehicle enabling us to do this respectfully and in collaboration with the people we are trying to help.

If this sounds exciting and reassuring, we want you to get in touch with us. Our workforce is stable with over 90% permanent staff, but we are always looking for practitioners wanting to come and practice confidently as part of our team making a difference for families and children.

We will invest in you in return for your investment in our families and children.
