Company
Tameside is a unique place with a wealth of culture, history and heritage. Forged strong and honest we are proud of the sights, sounds and foundations that make it a great place to live, work, invest and visit.
From the canals that run through our streets, to the industrial cotton mills that form our skyline, each of our nine towns bring unique characteristics to the story and the makeup of the Borough.
Located just 12 minutes from Manchester City Centre yet nestled in the foothills of the Peak District; we’re urban opportunity and rural tranquillity, with an estimated population of 226,493, Tameside offers the best of both worlds.
Our central location make us well-connected with excellent local transport links and close proximity to the M60 and M62, means our town centres and industrial hubs have easy access across the region. By rail, the local towns are just a train ride to nearby cities with Manchester Airport just a twenty-minute drive away.
Innovative, digital technology combined with creative businesses have made us home to a number of national and international brands such as Brother, the Hyde Group, and Kerry Foods. Our percentage of small to medium size businesses is higher than the North West average, and our range of artisanal craft and produce markets showcase our entrepreneurial spirit.
We’re makers at heart, and our community spirit is based on the ethic of honesty and loyalty. While we’re known for our graft, we’re innovators too. With a strong manufacturing tradition, particularly in the areas of textiles and innovative advanced engineering, food industries and of advanced manufacturing of chemical, electronic and computer products.
Our forefathers philanthropy gave the people of the borough libraries and public bath houses. Fast forward a couple of centuries and we’re now turning those Old Baths into state-of-the-art digital hubs for start-up businesses to prosper and grow. We’ve even brought cotton spinning back to the U.K. with English Fine Cottons in Tower Mill putting ‘Made in Britain’ back on the map.
Education is important to us and the Borough hosts one of the top FE colleges in the country with education supporting a thriving student population and Manchester’s universities within easy reach. Our three Advanced Learning Centres feature cutting edge laboratories and kit to ensure our students are prepared to take on high skilled jobs in key growth sectors. With a host of Outstanding Primary and Secondary schools, exceptional healthcare services and a range of affordable housing to boot it’s a perfect place to start and grow a family.
Being part of the Greater Manchester family also means we understand the importance of collaboration.
Partnership helps us get things done, with successes like Vision Tameside and Tameside Wellness Centre and Ashton Old Baths. Tameside is still changing with more projects and plans on the horizon. Significant investment is underway in key employment and mixed use developments such as St Petersfield, our work on our town centre masterplans, and infrastructure programmes will continue to improve our connectivity across the region and beyond.
We are aspirational and determined to be the best connected Borough in the UK with access to world class digital infrastructure so that we can ensure access for all businesses, residents and public services to help them transform.
We care about our people, and we take pride in knowing they’re supported every step of the way, whatever their goals or challenges.
