Kirklees Council is a key partner of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and is tasked, together with its other West Yorkshire neighbours and City of York Council to deliver economic growth throughout the City Region.  Highways Service is charged with delivering a range of Capital and Revenue funded works to support this.  It is our role to ensure our Statutory duties are achieved, and our legislative / regulatory obligations met, within a politically high profile area.

You will be responsible for providing effective maintenance and development of the Kirklees road network carrying out a range of highway works, including but not limited to: potholes, mason repairs, carriageway repairs, paving, carriageway and footway reconstruction, safety schemes, weed control, winter maintenance and electrical work.  You will also participate in other emergency duties.

This role is physically demanding and involves bending, lifting, carrying and walking on a regular basis.  You will work outside in all types of weather conditions and you will work a seasonal hours working pattern, with longer working hours in the Summer and shorter working hours in the Winter.

You may also be interested in working in our night team. The team works a shift starting from afternoon/evening, through the night, on a four nights on / four nights off pattern, including weekends and Bank Holidays. Enhancements and other allowances are applicable.

Requirements for this job:

  • You must have a NVQ 2 in a relevant subject area (such as Highways Maintenance, Civil engineering, street lighting / G39 accreditation) or have proven ability to work at this level.
  • You must be able to demonstrate your experience in undertaking, or assisting in undertaking, duties such as drainage cleaning, investigation and repairs, installation of pipes and construction of chambers and ironwork and erecting, maintaining and dismantling various types of highways street furniture, equipment and signage.

You may be asked to undertake and pass a Kirklees Council driving test and travel between sites in a council vehicle as part of job progression, as such, successful applicants would be encouraged to obtain a full and valid driving license as well as a Large Goods Vehicle licence including Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), as part of career progression.

Due to the nature of this job you will be required to undertake a standard medical screening and other medical screening as determined by the Occupational Health Unit appropriate to occupational risk.
