Closing date

Fixed Term/Secondment Opportunity until 31 March 2021

Our regeneration work has been central to the overall success of the borough. Our in-house, direct delivery approach has successfully delivered housing projects from a cross-subsidised programme. We’ve already built more than 900 homes ourselves – acting as our own developer, on our own land. We’ll complete 2,000 homes using this approach between 2018 and 2022, with funding, political commitment and stable governance in place to deliver thousands more in the coming years. By acting as our own developer, on our own land, we’ll continue to manage new homes long into the future. An innovative, challenging and exciting approach. As well as building modern, high-quality homes, we’re determined that residents moving into them get the first-class service that they deserve, recognising the unique handover and defect management needs of our tenants and leaseholders living in new-build properties. Delivering this successfully is crucial to the Council’s long-term reputation.

You will lead a new build team, created to ensure the efficient and effective handover and management of newly built properties from our Regeneration team into our Housing Services team. We require someone with exceptional stakeholder management skills, who will help to make a difference to the lives of residents moving into their new homes. You will work tirelessly to ensure that all reported defects have been resolved and that the properties are adequately maintained. You will have experience of working with contractors and knowledge of construction and development process.

The successful candidate will have a ‘can do’ attitude, ensuring excellent and proficient service delivery for residents and one that staff are proud to deliver.

As a Head of Service you will have managerial responsibility to the Director of Housing Services and, importantly, will sit within the Housing Management Team to ensure regular communication with peers. Operationally, the successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Property and Asset Management and Head of Building Maintenance to ensure we get the best from our contractors.

You will be leading a successful service and your excellent relationship building skills will ensure that the work of housing service and regeneration departments is aligned. As a Head of Service you will ensure that the service will operate separately initially during the defects liability period with a remit to dissolve into mainstream as an end goal. The successful candidate should be clear that a key aim of the role is to make sure the new-build service becomes mainstream.

Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. We have achieved a huge amount: our services, our schools, our public spaces are all amongst the very best. We have changed the reputation, not just of the Council, but of Hackney itself. Bringing jobs and investment into the borough, securing the legacy from the 2012 Games, and making this a place of which we can all be proud. Stretching from the edge of the City, to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, it is an area of rapid economic growth, particularly in the tech, media, fashion and other creative industries.

If you share our values and are ready to be part of our exciting journey please apply. If you would like to have an informal chat about the role please contact Ewelina Sorbjan on 07970 463 979.

It is essential that you attach a supporting statement, addressing how your skills, knowledge and experience would enable you to meet all aspects of the post, as indicated in the job description and person specification. Please refer to the Person Specification when structuring your statement.
