Passionate about transforming outcomes for children? Inspired to generate innovation and evolution of integrated health and social care services? Excited by the opportunity to work across partners and systems to make a difference that lasts a lifetime?

Working for Birmingham City Council is more than just a job – it's about making life better for the million people who live and work here. Our members and partners are providing the exciting and challenging influence we need to grow, to ensure that every child, citizen and place matters. With the foundations of a 21st Century Council, we’re focusing on our priorities of children, housing, health, jobs and skills. Now, we want you to come and help us become a truly modern council for our colleagues and our communities.

As a joint consultant in public health based with Birmingham City Council and working in a matrix across Solihull Council and Birmingham and Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group, your job will be to strengthen public health support for the NHS, particularly around the transformation of integrated children and young people’s services. The role is part of a wider matrix children and young people’s transformation team providing technical specialist advice as well as hands on transformational support. Taking your position on the Extended Leadership Teams of both councils, you will deputise for the Directors of Public Health when required.

You’ll inspire those around you, igniting desire and drive to transform services, as well as strengthening our partnership within both the NHS and neighbouring authorities. The pace of progress must be rapid and sustainable, while the portfolio may change over time. This means that your constant adaptability and focus on delivery is critical.

In this important role, you will lead key work to deliver the health and wellbeing components of the NHS 10-year forward plan. Initially, you will focus on improving outcomes for children and young people, and accelerating our programme of transformation within children and young people’s NHS services. We hope that you will bring expertise in NHS and local government transformational change to improve outcomes and a good understanding of children and young people’s public health and the wider system and policy context for this cohort.

Ultimately, your expertise will improve the health and wellbeing of Birmingham’s residents, reducing inequalities in health outcomes. You’ll ensure that we work in collaboration with Public Health England to protect local communities from threats to their health through infectious diseases, environmental and other public health hazards.

To be successful in your application, you’ll be included in either the GMC Specialist Register, the GDC Specialist List or the UK Public Health Register. Alternatively, you’re within six months of gaining entry, or you hold the equivalent training and experience.

Crucially, you bring proven experience of strategic leadership and consistent achievement in a broadly comparable environment. And, you’re knowledgeable around leading significant programmes of transformational change which have major impact on people and processes, and achieve significant savings.

Birmingham City Council is committed to equal opportunities in employment and we positively welcome your application irrespective of your gender, race, disability, colour, ethnic or national origin, nationality, sexuality, gender identity, marital status, responsibility for dependants, religion, trade union activity and age.

Closing date: 5 July 2019.
