Camden has produced a bold and ambitious Transport Strategy – ‘Healthy Streets, Healthy Travel, and Healthy Lives’ - that sets out our vision for transport in the Borough through to 2041. The Strategy contains seven core objectives which include delivering a sustainable transport system and streets that are inclusive and accessible for all, reducing all road casualties in Camden and progressing towards zero Killed or Seriously Injured, and reducing the impact of transport-based emissions and noise in Camden. We have also produced a new Clean Air Action Plan which sets out our commitments and schemes to radically improve air quality in the Borough, helping us meet stretching World Health Organisation targets.

Following the development of these two Plans, Camden has been successful in securing funding from the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund for a ‘Low Emission Neighbourhood’ in Camden Town, over the next 3 years. This includes transformational proposals to trial pedestrianizing sections of Camden High Street, leading towards a potential permanent scheme, development and implementation of new walking and cycling routes, other public realm improvements and a package of air quality improvement schemes. At the same time we are developing proposals to radically improve walking, cycling and public realm conditions, and reduce motor traffic levels, in the adjacent Kentish Town area, over the same time frame. Both schemes fall under our ‘Healthy Streets Project’ proposals set out in the Camden Transport Strategy (CTS), and is a total package of work of at least £2.5m.

We are looking for a highly motivated Principal Transport Planner to project manage, and deliver, these two transformational schemes, which will contribute significantly to the CTS and Clean Air Action Plan. You will also be asked to support other related initiatives, such as a cargo bike trial scheme, which is funded separately but will be delivered in these areas, and the development of other Healthy Streets Projects as they arise.

The proposals we have started to develop will require extensive engagement and consultation with the local community, including developing innovative approaches to stakeholder engagement. You will need to ensure that the objectives of the projects are developed in full, and met, whilst balancing multiple and often competing interests of a variety of stakeholders. And you will need to work closely with internal colleagues from across the Council, including sustainability, air quality, transport, parking, place-shaping and other teams.

This is a rare opportunity to shape and upgrade transport and air quality in two high-profile, complex, and exciting areas of inner London.

You’ll have previous, extensive experience of working in a transport/planning/accessible transport environment and a minimum of higher certificate or equivalent in a subject related to transport planning/traffic engineering/parking. (Candidates with different qualifications but demonstrating suitable experience in this or related work would also be considered).

You’ll have excellent knowledge of transport planning (and, if possible, an understanding and experience of air quality and sustainability issues) as well as an understanding of the wider context of traffic and transport including air quality, land use planning, urban design, sustainability, and smarter travel. Alongside this, you’ll possess a good understanding of regional and national policy and the legislative framework.

You will be an excellent and proven Project Manager with demonstrable experience of successfully delivering both infrastructure and behaviour change schemes in an urban environment.
