The Role - 2 year Fixed Term

We’re seeking an experienced urban design professional to work in the Planning Policy Team in the Royal Borough’s Planning and Building Control service. Working at a senior level within a small team, you’ll play a pivotal role in promoting excellence in urban design and shaping the future of one of London’s fastest growing boroughs.

The majority of new development is planned along our extensive waterfront, which includes five Opportunity Areas and the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. Our challenges include ensuring liveability within the high rise, high density neighbourhoods planned on the Peninsula, successfully managing change in Charlton Riverside as it evolves from an industrial area to an exemplary new urban district, and revitalising the potential of Thamesmead’s original ambitious vision to be the town of the 21st century.

You’ll be responsible for providing specialist advice and guidance on the full range of urban design matters, negotiating on high profile and strategic planning applications on a day to day basis. You’ll also play a leading role in the formulation of design policies in the new Local Plan/supplementary guidance and in building the skills and knowledge of colleagues. The position involves working across teams and departments, including shaping delivery of the council’s ambitious new build housing programme.

In addition to a good salary package, we offer a range of benefits including flexible working, generous annual leave, interest free season ticket loan and a career average pension scheme.

About you

We are looking for someone with the ambition, creativity and commitment to ensure that new development is of the highest quality design, supports our wider sustainability objectives, and preserves our built heritage for everyone to enjoy. Exceptional communication skills that can influence to a senior level and the ability to respond confidently in a variety of situations are essential, and you will have an analytical approach to working with excellent problem-solving and organisational skills.

The successful applicant will need to have a relevant built environment post-graduate qualification and be eligible for membership of RIBA or similar professional body. You will need to demonstrate a proven ability to provide high quality design advice and make competent decisions on urban design matters, complemented by a thorough understanding of current legislation, policy, guidance and best practice in relation to planning and design. You should have an understanding of the political and social context within which you are working.
