Job Details

Are you looking to make a difference in the lives of Disabled Children, Young People and their families?

Brent Council presents a unique opportunity for you to work with our children and families. There has never been a better time to join Brent as a Social Worker.

We are an Ofsted rated “Good” authority and we are rated “Outstanding” for the service we provide children in care and care leavers

Brent is a tremendously vibrant London borough where the iconic arch of Wembley Stadium dominates the skyline. Spanning both inner and outer London, it is a borough of huge contrasts in terms of its economic, environmental, ethnic and social make up. Brent’s diversity is evident to all who visit our borough and our long history of ethnic and cultural diversity has created a place that is truly unique and valued by those who live and work here.

The council is pursuing a far-reaching transformation agenda that better meets the needs of our community so it is an exciting time to join us. Staff and managers are ambitious for our children and the lived experience of our young people is at heart of our social work practice.

Strong leadership at a political level and throughout the council has resulted in significant improvements in the quality of social work practice for children since our last inspection and “firm foundations are now in place to facilitate good or better social work to flourish.” Ofsted May 2018.

The Post

Our recent restructure enables us to offer continuity of services to our children and families from 0 to 25 in line with The Children and Families Act 2014, SEND Code of Practice 2015 and other relevant legislation and guidance. The successful candidate will lead a team of social workers, social work assistants and short break coordinator to provide direct services and support our vision of improving education, health and well-being outcomes for our disabled children.

We are also working in partnership with schools, health colleagues and other local partners to ensure that our young people are well prepared to meet the challenges of adult life.

The Person

We are looking for a hard working, creative and aspirational individual to work as a Team Manager in our service. You will have excellent communication skills, experience in managing a team of social workers and be passionate about working with disabled children, young people and their families.

We would also welcome applications and support practice consultants or deputy team managers with experience in disability who are looking to further their professional development and continue their management pathway.

This role will offer you the opportunity to be part of a permanent management group as part of newly established Disabled Children and Young People Service (0-25). You will have supportive managers and will work within a dedicated team of colleagues with a good knowledge and understanding of disabled children and the challenges that they face.

Our Social Workers

• Provide an excellent social work service that enables our children and young people to fulfil their potential and achieve positive outcomes.
• Ensure that the voice of the child is always heard and that the views of our young people are at the heart of all of our case planning.
• Create genuine partnerships with parents and carers.
• Work in partnership with other agencies to provide effective and coordinated child care services.

Our Benefits

Our benefits and support package to staff is extensive, comparing favourably with other London boroughs. We offer:
• For hard to recruit to roles, a £5000 ‘golden hello’ and a relocation package, subject to eligibility.
• Competitive starting salaries plus a retention payment equivalent to £1200 per year for Social Worker roles.
• Manageable caseloads across all teams within a small team model, supported by social work practice consultants who ensure reflective practice is embedded.
• A practice framework that provides sturdy roots and areas for you to grow your practice.
• A training passport and a minimum of 10 days training per year. Our learning opportunities are designed to enhance direct social work practice through the Brent Practice Framework.
• A career progression policy that maps out how you will grow your career in Brent – from ASYE to Team Manager and beyond.
• Probably the best supportive technology amongst London local authorities through the use of iPhones and laptops.
• A modern and vibrant work environment within Wembley Park or our brand new office currently being built in Willesden.
• A culture of flexible working that reduces barriers for effective working – supported by technology and other resources such as Zipcars.
• Generous Local Government Pension Scheme.
• A host of other rewards and benefits such as a childcare deposit loan scheme, reduced cost gym membership, cycle to work scheme plus many more.

We look forward to receiving your application.
