Oldham is located on Manchester’s doorstep and partly within the spectacular Peak District National Park. Here, between the city’s buzz and the beautiful countryside, we’re doing important work to create a superb place to live and work. We’ve been a Co-operative Council since 2011, and we’re making great strides in improving our borough.

Today, we’ve never been more committed to our co-operative agenda. It’s about building inclusive economies and thriving communities, supported by co-operative services. Not only does everyone do their bit, but everybody benefits. As our new Managing Director of Children and Young People, you could play an important role in our extraordinary story.

As a valued member of the Council’s Senior Management and Joint Leadership Teams, you’ll work with senior officers, partners and elected members, reporting directly to the Chief Executive as the Statutory DCS.

In short, you’ll be responsible for the strategic leadership of Children’s Services, including Children’s Social Care and Education, Early Years and Skills.

Your focus will be on delivering the cultural change that puts children and families at the heart of everything we do. You’ll help to identify new opportunities to maximise efficiencies and continuous improvements. As a passionate advocate for transformation, you’ll ensure forward planning, as well as management and delivery against our financial and people resources.

What’s more, you will develop a culture of high performance that brings the focus back to child and young people, ensuring that all colleagues take ownership and drive change. In this way, you’ll be working to deliver outstanding service provision across the council and the borough.

You’ll be a role model, leading by example and supporting the development, co-ordination and implementation of the Co-operative agenda, our corporate strategies and policy. Ultimately, you’ll be setting the expectations that help us achieve our ambitious vision for Oldham.

We’re looking for someone who is educated to degree level and brings a proven track record of senior strategic leadership and achievement within Children’s Services, particularly Children’s Social Care. As well as a high level of business acumen, you have the ability to motivate and empower colleagues, and communicate a compelling vision to key stakeholders.

You also have proven experience of working effectively and impartially with elected members, and in supporting the democratic decision-making process. In addition, you bring experience of leading and commissioning large-scale change successfully within a complex organisation.

You will need to lead and support the wider partnership in putting children at the heart of what we do and that embraces a co-production ethos
