Job Details

Chelmsford Museum is seeking an enthusiastic Military Collections Assistant to support the Assistant Museums Manager (Curatorial and Learning) in the documentation and development of Regimental collections with a view to better understanding and interpreting their stories.

The Essex Regiment Museum is housed within Chelmsford Museum and has substantial collections that tell the story of the Essex Regiment and its predecessors. The collections are owned by the Trustees of the Essex Regiment Museum but are curated by the staff of Chelmsford Museum.

Chelmsford Museum has been progressing significant change since 2016 and has recently reopened following a major £2.2 million transformation, covering all aspects of the visitor experience.

In support of the Museum’s strategic objectives, the Military Collections Assistant will play a crucial role in enabling the Essex Regiment Museum to develop and focus collections for public benefit. This work will include documenting and assessing collections to both meet the curatorial standards required by the Arts Council England (ACE) Accreditation scheme and support the implementation of the museum’s Conservation Plan.

The work will include maintaining museum records, inventory checking, data entry, retrieving and storing objects.

This is an exciting new post for an individual looking to gain experience in the Museum sector and professional experience within a Museum undergoing rapid transformation.

Interviews will be held on Friday 18th October 2019.

If you wish to discuss the role, please contact Dr Mark Curteis, Assistant Museums Manager – Curatorial and Learning, mark.curteis@chelmsford.gov.uk, 01245 605702
