Burnt Tree Primary School

Burnt Tree Primary School is a welcoming, safe and friendly school. As an inclusive school, we ensure that everyone is treated fairly and provided with opportunities to achieve their full potential. We seek to motivate and inspire pupils through creative and innovative teaching and learning providing an irresistible curriculum that recognises and celebrates diversity. By promoting British values, we enable children to develop a sense of community and to understand their responsibilities and roles within that community. Working together we will enable our pupils to become lifelong learners who are independent, responsible and respectful.

The governing body at Burnt Tree Primary School is made up of twelve governors from a variety of backgrounds and with a range of different skills all of whom work hard to support the headteacher, staff and pupils.

We currently have two vacancies for governors and would ideally like to hear from applicants who have experience in the following areas:

• Previous experience of working within education
• HR policy and processes
• Interpreting financial data

A governing body works with the school to ensure that it delivers a good quality education and together with the headteacher, who is responsible for day-to-day management of the school, they set the school's aims and policies.

The key roles are:

• Setting the strategic direction for the school
• Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and the performance management of staff
• Overseeing the financial performance of the school, making sure its money is well spent and ensuring financial accountability and sustainability
Other duties include:
• Determining how the school's budget is spent including Pupil Premium
• Appointing and dismissing staff
• Hearing appeals and grievances
• Setting standards for pupil’s behaviour and discipline
• Ensuring school buildings are welcoming and safe
• Monitoring the school's aims and policies

The full governing body meets once every half term and there are two sub-committees: the Finance and Personnel Committee who meet each term, and the Pupil Progress, Standards and Curriculum Committee who also meet every half term.

Individual governors also take a lead role on behalf of the governing body in areas including health and safety, Pupil Premium, child protection and safeguarding, attendance and special educational needs. All governors report back on their visits to school at full governing body meetings.

In addition to attending meetings governors visit the school, regularly attend special events, meeting with staff and pupils and monitoring progress. They monitor progress in a variety of ways including presentations from subject leaders, learning walks, book scrutinies, attending pupil progress meetings and interviews with pupils. They also receive reports from the Headteacher and other leaders, the local authority adviser, outside agencies and the Junior Leadership Team.

If you feel like you would like to join our governing body please contact Claire Brown, School Business Manager on 0121 557 2967 or send a letter of interest to Burnt Tree Primary School, Hill Road, Tividale B69 2LN.
