Enhanced Level DBS Disclosure is required for appointment to this post. 

A better education means giving every child and young person the chance to reach their full potential.’ Evidence suggests that exclusion has a detrimental effect on both the academic achievement and mental health of the children and young people.  

The exclusion officer will be responsible for the development of processes and systems that facilitate early identification of pupils experiencing exclusion and co-ordinating the local authorities response. The role will involve ensuring schools and settings are meeting their legal requirements in relation to exclusion and attend Governor Disciplinary meetings as an independent representative to ensure due process is followed.  

They will also be required to attend Independent Reviews where parents exercise their right to one of these. The post holder will  also advise schools when children are at risk of exclusion and help to support all pupils to thrive in education. It will seek to reduce the number of fixed-term and permanent exclusions in the area and further build the resilience of schools, as well as other services, to support children and young people who are disengaging with school and displaying behaviour that challenges. 

We are looking for someone to bring their skills and knowledge of the education sector and the exclusion guidance and lead on this aspect of work. Our opportunity As the Local Authority Exclusion Officer you will lead development work around exclusions for the under the direction of the Lead adviser for Social, Emotional and Mental Health. Working closely with schools and local authority services you will ensure that all work is being carried out efficiently, meeting and work towards a reduction in exclusion across the county and support the implementation of the North Yorkshire Ladder of Intervention.

Given the nature of the role, travel across North Yorkshire will be required, as well as some visibility at County Hall, Northallerton. However, we very much support agile working across our organisation allowing you to work from home and other NYCC bases, subject to business requirements.

You will have an excellent approach to developing systems and processes, with the ability to motivate others and provide clear direction. You will also have a sound ability to communicate with various colleagues, adapting to and dealing with difficult situations as required.
