Are you a collaborative system leader able to deliver our vision and match our ambition?

Calderdale’s ambition is to be the Best Borough in the North and we are well on track to achieve this by 2024 when we reach our 50th year as a local authority. Our Vision for Calderdale is to create a place where Talent and Enterprise thrive, defined by Kindness and Resilience, a place full of hope, known for how our communities care for, and support each other. We want Calderdale to be Distinctive; where everyone can reach their potential and live a larger life.

Calderdale is set in the beautiful surroundings of the South Pennines in West Yorkshire, a vibrant Metropolitan Borough, and an active part of Leeds City Region. We have a capital programme approaching £400m over the next three years, including major flood and transport infrastructure. We have declared a Climate Change Emergency, and are determined this will shape our priorities and how we operate. We have strong market towns redefining themselves, and heritage assets such as the Piece Hall and Shibden Hall, showcased to the world through Gentleman Jack, supporting our vibrant visitor economy. We have developed Calderdale Cares, shaping our work in localities on integrating health and care, rooted in kindness and compassion, built upon strong relationships across the system, and innovative community anchors core to our future.

We also have systemic challenges, such as increasing rates of child obesity, increased demand for health and care across the lifespan, growing gaps in healthy life expectancy between different parts of our borough, and the debilitating impact of poor air quality in some of our towns.

We believe that when Public Health came back to local government it was coming home. It is at the core of what local government was two hundred years ago as the Industrial Revolution changed the nature of our place forever, it is core to what we do as a Council and as Calderdale today. Our present Director of Public Health is retiring in March 2020, and we are looking for an inspiring individual to build upon his success and take us to the next level in key areas especially tackling health inequalities and the impacts of climate change.

We are looking for a dynamic and innovative person with experience of developing people focused practice, and community resilience. You will also be comfortable utilising data and research to inform practice and be persuasive within a political environment. Our commitment to the role of public health is clear as the post reports directly to our Chief Executive, and will be part of our Corporate Leadership Team, as well as working closely with leaders and practitioners particularly in the NHS, but also across all sectors.

The Director of Public Health is a registered public health specialist and has a statutory responsibility to produce an independent annual report on the health of the population, progress on improving health and reducing inequalities and making recommendations that will enrich the lives of the local population. The successful applicant will lead on the development of a strategic needs assessment for the Calderdale area to ensure our residents are able to live healthy lives.

We look forward to your application. Luke Judd at Gatenby Sanderson will be supporting us to find the right applicant for this role, he can be contacted on 0113 205 6077.
