Sandwell Council is in the process of increasing the capacity of its highway works permit scheme.

Managing the increasing demand on our road network is vital if we are to minimise unnecessary congestion, delays and incidents on our network and deliver on our 2030 Vision Ambitions. We can only do this through great planning, scheduling and co-ordination of activities on our road network. The Sandwell’s Highway Works Permit Scheme went live in June 2019 with the aim of improving the strategic and operational management of the road network. Permits enhance our existing powers of coordination through the proactive review and approval of works, together with the capability to apply conditions to the planning and carrying out of works.

As one of a team of four Permit Officers, you will be a key part of the Network Management Team responsible for co-ordinating all activities on our road network, issuing or refusing permits to work in the highway. You will support the Permit Scheme Co-ordinator and Highway Assets and Statutory Functions Manager in all aspects associated with Sandwell’s Highway Permit Scheme including: assessment of permits; application of conditions; maintenance of records; enforcement and recovery of fees and charges and traffic management. You will also be involved in reporting processes, assisting in the preparation of management information.

We would love to hear from applicants who can demonstrate:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience in this specialist discipline
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation; Highways Act; NRASWA; Traffic Management Act Ability to assess risk and hazards when working on the highway
  • Experience of using technical IT systems.
  • Symology-insight or similar
  • Ability to work under pressure, organise your own workload and meet deadlines

This is an important role for Sandwell and if you are up for the challenge of delivering a successful Permitting Scheme we would love to hear from you.

If you would like an informal discussion about the role please ring Barry Ridgway on 0121 569 4027 or email barry_ridgway@sandwell.gov.uk.

Our Values; TrustUnity and Progress make us unique, they define how we do things and are reflected in the way we behave. They are important to us, guiding and shaping our organisational culture. Our values are key to us achieving Sandwell’s Vision 2030 and also guide us when we recruit.
