About us

We’re looking for new recruits ready to join Somerset County Council’s Communications Team, initially on a fixed term basis for 2 years. The Council provides great services and support and we need enthusiastic Communications Officers to help us tell our stories and make sure our 500,000+ residents know what we do and how we can help them.

You will be joining an organisation that values communications and will be working on projects and initiatives that are making a real difference and improving lives.

About the job

We’re after people who can be creative on a daily basis and are up to speed with digital communications, as well as being able to carry out traditional Press Office duties at speed and with style. You should be as comfortable filming and editing video content as you are crafting press releases and dealing with complicated media enquiries.

One of these roles will focus on supporting our trail-blazing Adult Social Care services, so we’re particularly keen to hear from you if you have a background or interest in this field.

About you

We’re after team players and all-rounders, flexible self-starters who are keen to learn new skills then share them with the rest of the team and others in the authority.

We’re a friendly, supportive bunch at the heart of a County Council that’s going places. If you’d like to join us, please get in touch.

For an informal discussion about these positions, please contact Mark Ford on 01823 359087.

In accordance with government legislation, the Unitary Council has:

  • Appointed a Leader of Council, who has formed a single party Executive of ten members (together they take key decisions and are responsible for the day-to-day running of the Council)
  • Five cross party Scrutiny Committees:
    • Scrutiny for Climate and Place
    • Scrutiny for Children and Families
    • Scrutiny for Adults and Health
    • Scrutiny for Communities
    • Scrutiny for Corporate and Resources
  • A Licensing and Regulatory Committee responsible for the Council’s licensing functions
  • A Strategic Planning Committee, along with 4 Area Planning Committees responsible for the Council’s planning and regulatory functions
