Job Purpose:
To carry out agreed plans to support service users and their carers that will meet their assessed needs in order to maximise participation and inclusion in the local community. To act on behalf of the social services department in fulfilling statutory obligations under relevant legislation, providing a safe, flexible and responsive service, when and where needed by service users and carers.

Specific Duties for:

SUPPORT WORKER (COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH)
Services to people with mental health needs are provided within the framework of the Care Programme Approach (CPA).
The principal aims of the CPA are to provide a needs-led, person-centred service to people with mental health difficulties. Community Support, as part of an integrated co-ordinated Care Plan will be to support, maintain and enable individuals and their carer's, within a health and social context to access facilities, services and opportunities appropriate to their needs. By working in partnership with the individual, their carer's, other professionals and agencies, the Support Worker will, within the agreed care plan:

  • Assisting users in all aspects of their daily living activities in order to achieve maximum independence.
  • Working in partnership with users and their carer's to ensure the care plan reflects their needs and aspirations.
  • Supporting users in a range of initiatives e.g. Housing, Welfare, Benefits/Rights, Advocacy and respite to carer's.
  • Being responsive to the goals and aspirations of users including those with complex needs by using opportunities in further education, employment, recreational and social facilities by building upon individual skills, ability and choice.
  • Working with other professionals in ensuring that service users are receiving the help they need.

  • While Support Workers will not act as ' Key Worker / Care Co-ordinator 'they will contribute to all aspects of the CPA under the supervision of a nominated person within the Community Mental Health Team. (The term 'Key Worker / Care Co-ordinator' is a specific role with CPA - responsible for ensuring all activities are delivered within the local joint CPA Policy/Procedures.)
    Education and Training:

  • NVQ Level 3 (D)
  • First Aid Certificate (D)
  • English Language GCSE or equivalent (D)

  • Work Experience:

  • Experience working in a supportive relationship and providing personal care with service users and their carer's.(E)
  • Experience planning activities and programmes for Service users and their carer's. (E)
  • Previous work experience in either a paid or voluntary capacity working with service users and their carer's. (D)
  • Experience Collaborating with other professionals and agencies for the benefit of the client. (D)
  • Familiarity with the principles of current legislation. ( D)

  • Skills and Knowledge:

  • An awareness of problems and issues that can impact on the Service users and Carer's. (E)
  • Sound knowledge of health and safety issues. (E)
  • Commitment to working with Service Users and their families in a non- discriminatory way. (E)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality. ( E)
  • Ability to work on own initiative and to consult where appropriate. ( E)
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries. ( E)
  • Ability to work as part of a team. (E)
  • Ability to work under pressure. (E)
  • Ability to manage time effectively. (E)
  • Ability to contribute to the assessment and ongoing monitoring of service users and their families. (E)
  • Familiarity with service user's protocol's and practice. (D)
  • Knowledge of the functions of a social services Department. ( D)
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve realistic goals with clients based on a supportive relationship as identified within the care plan. (D)
  • Knowledge of Information Technology Systems. (D)

  • Circumstances

  • Hold a current driving licence and have use of a car or access to a car - Business insurance required. (E)
  • To be flexible and be prepared to work unsociable hours when required. (E)

  • The role requires you to be mobile throughout a wider operational area including travelling around the county of Essex and beyond, transporting service users and their belongings and to be able to do so in an emergency. Driving licence and car or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means is essential.

    As part of employment with Essex County Council (ECC) should your role require a DBS check you will be required to register with the DBS update service. The DBS update service ensures all registered DBS certificates are kept up to date and allows authorised parties to view the status of your certificate.
