We’re truly ambitious about building on our success to date and becoming a much more modern and effective council. We are focused on delivering best in class services that help make opportunities for our residents and community as well as a great place to live and work.  We’re also committed to improve and reform both our services and our culture to meet our communities’ changing needs. Good governance is key to this and we now need a Director of Legal Services to support our transformation and help accelerate our progress.

As Director of Legal Services you’ll be a key member of our leadership team. We need to make sure governance is of the highest standard as our Council responds to our residents and stakeholders and as wider local government change gathers pace. As our Monitoring Officer and qualified solicitor, you’ll be at the forefront of modernising legal services. You’ll play a key role in our drive to be recognised as an ‘enterprising council’, shaping the organisation to expand our range of delivery models, challenging any inefficiencies and being more commercial and proactive with our residents and communities.

You’ll lead the strategic development and management of legal, democratic, administrative and governance services to the council, providing legal support on complex corporate and strategic issues. Your approach and style will be collaborative, innovative, commercial and you will bring an understanding of alternative service delivery models. A proactive approach to problem solving is a vital part of creating success in this role as is building trusting relationships with senior officers and members.

Derbyshire is a wonderful place to live, visit and work. The post will be based at County Hall at Matlock in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will play a guiding influence in the appointment of a new Assistant Director to report into this role as that process progresses too.
