Please note this role is based at The Maples in Harlow. The Maples is a short breaks children's residential home that supports young people with autistic spectrum disorders, physical and learning disabilities.

The work pattern for this role will be on a rota basis and hours are averaged over the rota. The shift patterns require staff to work two out of three weekends and Bank Holidays including Christmas and New Year. You will be expected to sleep in and be on call overnight on a regular basis depending on the needs of the service. Please be aware that you need to be able to start work at 6.45am.

You are required to state your full employment history since leaving full time education (with any employment gaps of 4 weeks or more being explained) on your application in order to be considered for the role. Failure to do so will result in your application not being considered.
In-house training will be provided for this role, so it is a fantastic opportunity to start your career within children and families social care.

The Role

Under the guidance of the shift leader in accordance with the policies and procedures you will support the day to day care and development, safety and management of the children and young people in the home. As an active team member, you will support the provision of a caring, nurturing, safe, reflective and empowering environment to enable the children and young people to reach their full potential and support the learning process and creation of a learning environment. As part of your role you will take an active part in providing information for care planning and reviewing of children's cases in line with department instructions and relevant legislation. This will include writing reports and completion of records. Your handwriting must be legible.

The role will include providing personal care and supporting children with specialist healthcare needs (eg peg feeds), working with children that can be violent and or aggressive whilst promoting independence and equality.

You will make use of your professional skills, your personal skills, life experiences and interests to inspire the children and young people and work closely with them to support their life journey to identify their own skills, strengths and interests and help them to develop these. You will also develop positive authentic relationships with your colleagues, the children and young people to provide a good adult role model whilst developing your own understanding, skills and knowledge so that these can be utilised to positively contribute to the homely environment.

You will always have the skills and ability to conduct yourself in a professional manner and be able to work in partnership with families and other professional.



Experience of working with Children and/or in a caring profession is essential.
* A willingness to develop knowledge about and experience in a range of direct working practices with children and young people with disabilities whilst they are living in a children's home.
* The ability to understand and manage challenging behaviour including aggression and violence of children with disabilities, which as a last resort may require physical restraint (For which training will be provided).
* A basic understanding of child development and the ability to promote people's equality, diversity and rights.
* To hold or be willing to achieve the 'level three diploma' children and young people's workforce - social care pathway or an NVQ equivalent.
