The Short Breaks Service for children with disabilities within City of York have an exciting opportunity for an appropriately qualified Occupational Therapist to join our short breaks team in York.

Due to service development and restructure we are looking to recruit an occupational therapist who will be able to work from our new purpose built service which will be based in Acomb, York.

Our  centre, for children with disabilities ,will ensure services for children with disabilities are innovative, flexible and integrated and will be the base for our residential short breaks and also be the base for a number of professionals working with children with disabilities in York.

We are looking to recruit an Occupational Therapist who is able to meet the needs of children and young people with Autism, Physical Disabilities, Learning Disabilities and/or additional health needs so that they are able to access community short breaks, short breaks foster care and residential short breaks.

As part of the role you will  assess complex and special needs, complete comprehensive assessments including risk evaluation, moving and handling plans, and sensory assessments so that children and their families are able to access short break activities across varied environments including carer’s homes, the Disabled Children’s Residential Short Breaks service and community settings.

You will have an in-depth knowledge of the effects of disability on a person’s emotional, psychological and social life and an understanding of the most appropriate intervention options and be able to share this with families and professionals.

As part of assessments you will recommend the provision of equipment to facilitate safe functioning within the short breaks environment and children’s homes, personally fitting the equipment when appropriate and instructing service users on safe and appropriate use.

You will also have an understanding and working knowledge of sensory needs of children with disabilities and be able to undertake Sensory Integration Therapy Assessments and Interventions and be prepared to develop this area within our service.

While this role is based within our Children’s short breaks services team, you will also have close links and receive clinical supervision from the Occupational Therapy Service based within CYC.

You will be supported by an experienced team, have a thorough induction into your role and also have opportunities for supervision, training and development to support the work that you do.

This job is advertised on a one year contract in the first instance with the potential to become permanent

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2: Can express him/herself spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.
