This is a unique role, unlike many others that exist in the sector. The Head of Law and Governance is an influential role that sits at the centre of our success as a council.

Oxford is a vibrant, dynamic, international City with a fabulous environment. We are an evolving organisation that plays an influential role in the success of the City. Working closely with our partners, we are driving a progressive agenda that is building stronger communities, tackling climate change and helping the economy to thrive.

Not only will you be the Council’s Monitoring Officer, responsible for Governance, Democratic Services, and Legal Services but you will also sit at the heart of our commercial activity. You will work closely with articulate and thoughtful Members who are passionate about the City. You will be exposed to conversations with our external partners: Oxfordshire County Council, the District Councils, Oxford University, Oxford Brookes University and large employers like the BMW Group. At a time when the Government is publishing a series of white papers that will dictate the future direction of local government and the wider public sector, our Head of Law and Governance will be a vital role that enables Oxford City Council to respond to these changes and maximise the benefits for our residents.

ABOUT YOU

We are seeking a passionate leader, someone that is excited by the potential of shaping, developing and nurturing teams. Someone that can inspire high performance and play a positive role in our culture change programme.

You will be a collaborative leader who is solution-focussed and agile. You will be motivated by operating outside of your professional discipline and constantly looking for ways to support colleagues tackle challenges. You will embrace experiential and cognitive diversity and see the benefit that comes from people having different life experiences.

As our Monitoring Officer, you will have previously held the statutory duties in another local authority. You will have a commercial outlook and experience of working with external stakeholders in a range of settings. You will possess an outward looking attitude and see the benefits that come from having an external network that helps drive best practice.

This role will offer the successful candidate a scope of work that will be varied, exciting and stimulating. You will not be dealing with traditional local authority matters and will be working at the interface of public and private sector. We are a fast working organisation that has delivered a lot in recent years and anyone that joins the Council will quickly be able to point to a wide array of achievements that enriches their career.
