About the Department
As a high-performing planning department we deal with a wide range of applications, making us one of the busiest planning authorities in the country. We’re a dynamic forward-thinking team with a can-do approach and are always striving to improve our service. We’re also proud of our learning and development commitment and take pride in growing our own to create a strong and resilient spatial planning team.
You’ll investigate, consider and report on a full range of applications, development proposals and enforcement matters within a designated area of the Borough. This will involve you in negotiating planning applications, preparing appeal statements and appearing at public inquiries and hearings. You’ll also advise other Council department and answer enquiries from applicants.
Drafting reports and recommending whether applications are granted or refused, you’ll advise applicants and other customers on how schemes may be altered so permission may be granted. Your other responsibilities will include inspecting plans, making site visits and assessing development proposals and possible breaches of planning control.

With a Planning degree or equivalent, you’ll also need licentiate membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (or equivalent), and evidence of relevant continuous professional development.
You’ll bring knowledge and ideally planning experience, some of which should have been gained in a development management (including planning enforcement) environment. You’ll also need an excellent working knowledge of current planning legislation and practice. And, with a methodical, thorough approach, you should be able to construct concise reports presenting clear and persuasive arguments and give both formal and informal presentations.
Ideally, you’ll also have a working knowledge of London planning issues and of historic buildings and conservation areas.

We work in partnership with Hampshire County Council (HCC) who deliver many transactional services on our behalf. Although most communications will be from HCC, all selection and appointment decisions will be made by RBKC. Certain services are shared across more than one Council area to nearby neighbouring Authorities. This enhances delivery and reduces costs.
