The Role:

The Fire Safety Apprentice will contribute to the effective management of fire safety across the Council’s housing portfolio.  The role that you will develop into sits within the fire safety department, who are extremely busy implementing fire risk management improvements following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.  It is an exciting time to join the team and the apprenticeship will offer you the opportunity to learn practical fire safety skills whilst working towards a recognised safety qualification.

You will work with a new fire safety team, that was set up in 2019 to implement safety improvements across our housing.  There are nine other roles in the team and you will get to work with all of those roles, which offers a great opportunity to support your structured learning with hands-on training.

The apprenticeship will provide you with a strong foundation in safety and risk management and enable you to progress within a career at a time when there is a skills shortage within the safety industry.

About You:

Candidates will have achieved a pass in English and Maths at Level 1 or above, GCSEs or equivalent.

Role Requirements:

  • You will assist the fire safety team in the day-to-day management of fire risk across Housing Management
  • You will work with management and delivery teams to help to ensure that our buildings are safe for residents, staff, contractors and visitors
  • You will help to implement findings from fire risk assessments, working alongside and learning from experienced officers
  • You will learn to complete fire and general safety inspections and assist by carrying these out, once able to do so
  • You will help with the preparation and management of Building Safety Cases, under management supervision
  • You will get involved in resident engagement, ensuring that our residents receive a high quality service
  • You will learn the principles of practical risk management and assist in the implementation of a risk management system within Housing Management

Further duties will include:

  • Carry out simple fire risk assessment reviews
  • Visit sites to check fire risk assessment actions
  • Carry out simple checks of contractor works
  • Carry out basic fire safety checks and inspections

We work in partnership with Hampshire County Council (HCC) who deliver many transactional services on our behalf. Although most communications will be from HCC, all selection and appointment decisions will be made by RBKC. Certain services are shared across more than one Council area to nearby neighbouring Authorities. This enhances delivery and reduces costs. Your recruitment information will advise if your remit extends beyond RBKC.
