The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant increase in unemployment and uncertainty in the job market.  Apprenticeships are identified as key opportunities in the recovery period and an important measure in the Government Plan for Jobs.  Our Economy Strategy also places a great emphasis on apprenticeships and opportunities for young people, outlining our ambitions to support the local economy and assist residents in gaining sustainable employment and progressing their aspirations.

This is a newly created post within our Economic Development Team leading on our apprenticeship work with local employers, partners and communities. The main task in this role is to deliver activities to directly increase the range and number of opportunities available and connected to local residents. The Council's Economic Development Team shapes and coordinates the contribution of the Council, partners and other agencies to delivering a strong local economy.  The post-holder will join our busy Employment and Skills Team at this crucial time to help progress local ambitions to create and promote local apprenticeships as well as contribute to wider economic development and pandemic recovery objectives.

The role of the Apprenticeship Coordinator is to increase the awareness of and the range and number of opportunities available to and taken up by residents of Kensington and Chelsea.  The role is externally focused working primarily with employers, schools, education providers and the wide range of employment support to develop the range, quality and take up of apprenticeships, traineeships and related pathways.

About You:

You will possess experience of working in a business facing or business engagement role and establishing successful partnerships.  This will be supported by a good understanding of apprenticeships and related skills training delivery e.g. traineeships (particularly in London context) and ability to deliver workshops, briefings and contribute to events such as careers fairs. 

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate excellent communication skills, including building and maintaining relationships across a range of partners and will be able to engage and support  different audiences from local communities to employers and learning providers.

Role Requirements:

  • Raise the awareness, profile and value of apprenticeships, traineeships and quality vocational pathways as a progression route for local residents across age groups, including school pupils.
  • To work across the local landscape (including with employers, schools, colleges, with residents and employment support providers) to build knowledge, understanding and positive action to increase activity.
  • Work with colleagues across the Council to develop effective approaches to enable more residents and young people including Looked After Children, Care Leavers and young people with special education needs to access opportunities.
  • Work with colleagues to identify opportunities within the Council’s supply chain and organisations who deliver services on behalf of the Council. Ensure these opportunities are accessible, promoted and available to local residents.
  • Work with colleague seeking opportunities for employment and skills outcomes related to local development sites through the use of Planning agreements and Employment and Skills plans.
  • Contribute to NEET reduction in the borough by developing Apprenticeships and Traineeships as opportunities to re-engage young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).
  • Maximise Apprenticeships as an opportunity to up-skill/re-skill the existing workforce and borough’s residents seeking employment and training opportunities.

We work in partnership with Hampshire County Council (HCC) who deliver many transactional services on our behalf. Although most communications will be from HCC, all selection and appointment decisions will be made by RBKC. Certain services are shared across more than one Council area to nearby neighbouring Authorities. This enhances delivery and reduces costs.
