Sheffield is an ambitious and inspiring city who have been awarded an overall ‘good’ rating by Ofsted for its Children’s Social Care. As part of the city’s commitment to children and young people and their improved outcomes we are seeking to appoint an outstanding Service Leader who possesses experience, ambition, and passion to drive the service forward and contribute to the strategic direction of the council.

Reporting to the Executive Director for People Services, you will lead, manage and shape excellent services to make a real difference to the lives of children and young people in Sheffield.

You will be part of a Senior Leadership Team that has an innovative approach to service delivery, supported by dedicated staff and partners who put children and young people first in everything they do.

As Director for Education and Skills, you will take a lead role in delivering an excellent 0-19 (25 for SEND) education infrastructure maximising opportunities for all children and young people. You'll have the opportunity to influence and work with Sheffield’s highly collaborative and committed head teachers, governors, academy sponsors and other strategic partners to promote educational excellence and tackle underperformance. You will ensure that the Service is appropriately resourced, organised and structured to meet the Council's statutory obligations and ambitions.

You'll be responsible for the strategic direction and delivery of a number of key areas:

  • School Effectiveness Services – working with our partner Learn Sheffield
  • Statutory School and Academy Standards monitoring
  • SEND (special educational needs and disability) including Children with Disabilities services
  • Education Support services including fair access to all schools for every child
  • Provision for children outside mainstream education or missing education.
  • Working with Elected Members

We are looking for someone whose leadership can provide a culture and environment in which our excellent team can thrive. You will bring personal expertise, credibility with stakeholders, well-developed political and commercial awareness and a clear vision of how to realise the full potential of our education and skills service.

To be successful in this complex and diverse role, you'll have an advanced knowledge and skill level in a number of specialties, including education, finance, management and procedural matters. You will have a proven track record of budget management ensuring resources and services available to the Council are utilised effectively and efficiently. You need to be able to draw on a background of success, with experience of systems leadership in education, in line with national and local guidance.
