Birmingham City Council is the largest local authority in Europe – and we’re on the cusp of something truly special. With an annual spend of over £3billion we’re gearing up for major events such as the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the creation of HS2. Championing economic growth for the city, we’re determined to create a brighter future for all our citizens and at the heart of this ambition lies our Finance team. Join us and you won’t just improve life for 1.1 million people, you’ll help Birmingham become one of the world’s most successful, sustainable cities.

Our vision is for Finance to be a best-in-class function that’s agile, innovative and proactive, as well as diverse and inclusive. This is an incredibly exciting time for us; the opportunities for you to contribute and influence, to make bold and significant changes, are endless. As we change finance services to give customers more control and add value through data analytics and insight, you’ll be at the forefront of achievement and progress.

As a capable Finance Business Partner, you’ll be on top of the challenge and ready to deputise for the Assistant Director – Service Finance (Deputy S151). Your main task is to lead a team to provide an excellent financial service to one of three directorates – Neighbourhoods (including Housing), Education and Skills and Adults. Naturally collaborative, you’ll be a key member of that Directorate Management team, giving guidance on everything from key business planning assumptions, major transformations and exploring commercial opportunities. Through great professional relationships, you’ll explain important information, encouraging budget holders to think about long-term financial impacts of their decisions. You’ll also provide the analysis and insights needed to shed light on specific issues. It’s all about driving business performance and making Finance’s expertise reach as far as it can. Motivated, caring and passionate about your work, you’ll be fired up every day.

A role of this scale calls for an experienced Finance Business Partner with tried and tested skills. You’ve advised at senior levels, worked successfully with partners and brought in change initiatives. CCAB-qualified, you’ll know about local government finance, relevant legislation, business processes and governance. Along with this expertise, you’ll bring a gift for communication, including negotiation, coaching and constructive challenging. Bringing all these talents together, you’ll be a trusted and ethical advisor, ensuring compliance with legislation and governance, and putting your finance knowledge to work. Articulate, resilient and politically smart, you can draw on excellent business acumen and innate determination.

This is more than your next finance role. It’s a chance to create a Brighter, Bolder Birmingham.
