We have a fantastic opportunity in Somerset within our Transport Commissioning team. We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic person to take a lead role in shaping our future transport plans and policies as a full time Technical Lead Officer.  We offer both a flexible working environment and flexible working hours.

Our busy team provides strategic guidance in developing new transport policies, strategies and models and developing the evidential base for the Council’s transport policy development including technical assessments where necessary. We work closely with a range of stakeholders, internal and external, to ensure that our Local Transport Plan delivers agreed policy outcomes for the benefit of our Somerset communities.

Here's what you can expect to be doing

The range of opportunities is both challenging and rewarding. You would be providing strategic guidance in helping to shape new transport policies, strategies and models through working collaboratively and in partnership with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

You will be engaged in wide consultation and interaction with a variety of industry, business and representative bodies and undertaking technical assessments where necessary. 

You will play a key role in preparing our updated Local Transport Plan, providing guidance to the implementation and performance teams and monitoring the plan to ensure policy outcomes are delivered.  This will include recommending policy changes to senior managers and members to improve service delivery.

You will lead technical transport planning studies that help in developing infrastructure delivery plans and formulating funding bids to maximise opportunities for local sustainability and growth.

You will provide transport policy and traffic modelling input to the development plan process, place-shaping and regeneration activities related to the growth of settlements and planning applications.

You will also evaluate the implications of new legislation and best practice guidance and provide advice on the implications for the County Council and propose necessary changes to the Council’s planning processes.

And more broadly, you will work with Local Authorities and Stakeholders in the South West and nationally in considering wider than local transport issues.

A few things about you

You will be:

Educated to degree level or equivalent through relevant professional development.

Experience of working within a transport planning environment with broad experience of policy and strategy development

Ability to monitor performance against deadlines and milestones.

Ability to motivate and empower others.

Ability to prepare observations and communicate them clearly and unambiguously in writing and verbally to a range of audiences.

Ability to assess the implications of proposals and work with people to develop appropriate solutions that are evidence based.

Ability to assimilate information from technical reports.

Ability to read and understand policies, procedures and guidance.
