Job Details

City of York Council is looking to recruit a committed and enthusiastic person to provide high quality support to all customers living in the resettlement hostel for young people aged 16-25, with a view to helping people move on into independent accommodation suitable to their needs. Customers may be vulnerable and under a lot of stress and therefore the successful applicants will have good interpersonal skills and will understand the issues young people face when homeless.

You will be capable of working on your own initiative under the guidance of a supervisor.

Experience of working with homeless people would be an advantage but it is essential that you understand the issues surrounding the client groups. You will need to be able to demonstrate that you are sympathetic and firm and you are able to cope in situations which can be stressful as well as rewarding.

Job Share is not suitable due to variable shift patterns. There is a need for continuity of support for vulnerable customers and Job Share may mean staff have prolonged periods off rota and residents may suffer due to the inconsistency.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C1: Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly. Only a conceptually difficult subject can hinder a natural, smooth flow of language.

City of York Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. We require the successful candidate to undertake an enhanced Criminal Record check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

The Council is highly committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive Health & Wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous Learning & Development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings.
