Joining our Building Control Service in this senior position, you will be responsible for the supervision of up to six Building Control Surveyors/Technicians, ensuring that building control applications are managed in accordance with legislation and the Council’s internal policies.
In this role you will work with the Head of Building Control, District Surveyor and other members of the Service Leadership Team in ensuring that the service is able to successfully meet the challenges of the new Building Safety Regime.
In this role you will also serve as Project Surveyor on a range of building control applications, including the Council’s New Homes Programme; as well as serve as a Dangerous Structure Engineer (DSE) joining the Council’s 24hr/365d Dangerous Structure Service.

You will be a full chartered member of a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS, CABE, CIOB, IStructE, ICE, IFE) with the knowledge, skills and experience to be assessed as a Level 6 Surveyor under the LABC Competency Matrix able to deal with complex and high risk building control applications.
You’ll have excellent communication and negotiation skills, with a high level of organisational and political awareness.
As part of the interview process you will be assessed on how you embody the Council’s core values and behaviours.
As a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), lead the building control service, ensuring it operates in accordance with all legislative requirements and the Council’s policies and procedures.
Deputise for the Borough District Surveyor, in the execution of delegated powers as set out by the Council’s Constitution.
Manage a team of building control surveyors and technicians in delivering the statutory building control service in accordance with the requirements of legislation and the Council’s policies and procedures.
Enforce compliance of the building regulations including issuing enforcement notices; undertaking court appearances and preparing witness statements.
Represent the service at all levels within and external to the Council and develop excellent professional relationships with partner organisations such as the Building Safety Regulator and Fire and Rescue Service(s).
Undertake the role of Project Surveyor on assigned building control applications, ensuring that applications are managed in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements as well as the Council’s policies and procedures.
Act as Dangerous Structure Engineer (DSE) for the Council, attending dangerous structure call outs (including out of hours), liaising with the emergency services and other relevant authorities in safeguarding public safety.
Respond to complaints and FOI requests relating to the Building Control Service.
