Job Details

This is a great time to join Kent County Council.  As the biggest County Council in the country, there is a fantastic opportunity to make a big difference. Our focus is to work as one council to design and deliver a cohesive, modern, effective and efficient public service offer for all Kent’s residents, businesses and communities, working effectively together across the council and with our partners.  Kent is a great county to live in too, with excellent schools, vibrant towns, a spectacular coastline, rolling green hills and beautiful scenery that blends in with the many historic buildings.

Kent has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years and, whilst many elements of this growth are exciting and encouraging; new housing developments, new business expansion and inward investment, the challenges that the county face are broad and complex and our communities have diverse needs. You will be leading a Directorate that delivers over 300 services to the residents of Kent.

During the course of the last year the Administration has refocused the Five-year Plan in order to develop our Interim Strategic Plan “Setting the Course” outlining five key challenges to enable sustainable recovery and growth for our County.

As Corporate Director, Growth, Environment & Transport, you will be a skilled strategist and catalyst for unlocking Kent's potential; leading on direct regeneration strategies to promote, enhance and sustain economic development and county-wide infrastructure, working closely with both the Leader of the Council and Cabinet Members. Significant progress has been made in managing environmental challenges but tackling the climate emergency and protecting the natural environment continues to be an absolute priority and is a critical element of this role.  This is a real opportunity to make a difference, to utilise your innovative and strategic thinking and create a step change in how we create policies that are future ready, and to continue to develop the relationships that we have with our wide range of private and public sector partners.  As part of the Corporate Management Team, you will lead the management of our organisation and will help us engage with our communities and ensure their future wellbeing remains at the heart of what we do.  In a Council committed to changing for the better, you will be building on success to take the Growth, Environment and Transport Directorate forward - this is a great time to join Kent and be part of something bigger.

You will not only need to influence and persuade through personal credibility and integrity, you will also need to lead and shape the GET strategic agenda within a large, county wide system with multiple partners. We welcome and encourage candidates from a variety of backgrounds, although it is likely that you will have had experience of working in a local authority at some point in your career or alongside, as a close partner, helping to deliver positive outcomes.

We are keen to work with exceptional individuals who have the energy, ideas and ambition to make a sustained difference to the people of Kent; someone who shares our commitment to improving the quality of life of our residents and is able to maximise their impact through working in partnership across the Council and with other organisations.

Company

In East Kent, tourism is a major industry and the attractions include world famous Canterbury and seaside resorts like Broadstairs and Margate. The landscape is ideal for cycling, horse riding and walking, there are many footpaths and bridleways including the North Downs Way. The county thrives on its reputation as the Gateway to Europe and its use as the United Kingdom's principal access to the continent through ports like Dover, Folkestone, Ramsgate, Dartford and Sheerness is increasing rapidly. Major development has taken place on the coast and inland associated with the construction of the Channel Tunnel. One of the largest business parks in Europe is being developed jointly with American developer Rouse (Kent), and is known as Kings Hill. Kent has also traditionally been regarded as the Garden of England, deriving from the quality of its agriculture and in particular the intensive fruit, vegetable and hop production. Traditional Kentish industries like papermaking and cement manufacture are located in North and Mid-Kent, particularly along the banks of the Rivers Thames and Medway. The ease of access to neighbouring London and the lure of a decent house in pleasant surroundings have attracted many new residents from the capital.
