The Essex Climate Action Commission is an independent body which was set up to advise Essex about tackling climate change.
The commission has over 30 members. They include a Lord, local councillors, academics, business people and 2 members of the Young Essex Assembly. Find out more about the commissioners from their biographies.
The Commission is working with other Essex local councils and public sector organisations as well as with individuals, businesses and schools to identify ways where we can mitigate the effects of climate change, improve air quality, reduce waste across Essex and increase the amount of green infrastructure and biodiversity across the Greater Essex geography.
Working as part of the Commission communications team and reporting to the Commission's Communications Manager, the postholder will produce and deliver climate change-related communications to key internal and external stakeholders, partners and the public using a variety of channels including press releases, emails, newsletters, the programme's website and social media, as well as face-to face presentations and engagement events. The postholder will play a key role in managing and responding to customer enquiries received by the programme from members of the public and external stakeholders.
The postholder may also be required to undertake routine tasks to support the programme's governance activities such as Commission meetings, programme boards and steering boards and administrative tasks as required.
- Take responsibility for the preparation of a monthly Commissioner newsletter.
- Produce and write content for an external quarterly newsletter.
- Play a key part in the organisation and delivery of stakeholder engagement and other events which are key to the Commission, including venue and catering arrangements, and virtual events when physical events cannot be held.
- Attendance at virtual events (including some evening and weekend working) and engaging face-to-face or online with members of the public and stakeholders.
- Face-to-face and online engagement with stakeholders, including some preparation of written copy for inclusion in external publications to help raise awareness of the Commission and the benefits of climate change action.
- Be responsible for keeping the content on the Commission's website up to date.
- Manage the programme team calendar to ensure all regular Commission group meetings are scheduled, the meeting rooms and dates are booked, and invites to attendees issued.
- Attend and take minutes at meetings when required.
- Assist with writing press releases, Council Member and MP enquiry responses, social media content plans and arrangements for PR events.
- Compile written and filmed case studies of Commissioners' and stakeholders' experience using broadband services.
- Help to develop the Commission's presence on social media - Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn - including increasing the engagement levels on all channels, and producing topical content to be shared across the channels.
- To take responsibility for small discrete projects or campaigns. To scope, research and cost different options and to provide recommendations to the Communications Manager. To lead or assist in the implementation of such projects as required.
- Any other duties as required by the Programme Manager to support the programme delivery.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
- Advanced skills in written and in person communication. Confident in engaging with a broad variety of stakeholders at different levels via a range of channels.
- Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint knowledge and experience of using at an intermediate level. An understanding of other relevant software applications such as image or video editing, mapping or profiling software.
- Experience of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite programmes, including Photoshop, After Effects, Audition, Illustrator, InDesign and Premiere Pro.
- Competent user of social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn), social media management platforms such as Hootsuite and experience of website editing using a content management system.
- Ability to work creatively and effectively and including the ability to design and manage a range of complex situations and issues; very organised with good attention to detail.
- Educated to diploma/degree level or equivalent by experience and evidence of continuous professional development.
This position will initially, in line with current government guidance be based from home, with an expectation of being home based for the foreseeable future. However, if / when government guidelines change the role may then revert to being office based, whilst retaining some flexible working options.
