Due to the expansion of the council’s Public Rights of Way team we have a vacancy for a Definitive Map Assistant who will assist with the review and maintenance of an accurate and up to date Definitive Map for the York administrative area.

If you;

•Are methodical and enjoy working with a high attention to detail

•Have a real interest in historical documents and enjoy poring over old maps and plans, and Enjoy meeting and conversing with a diverse range of people, then this may be the job for you!

A willingness to learn a new and specialist discipline is more important than direct knowledge.  You will assist the council’s Definitive Map Officer in this important area of work by investigating evidence supporting the existence of possible public rights of way, processing changes to existing paths, undertaking site visits, carrying out public consultation and drafting legal orders, notices and order maps.

You should have an appropriate relevant qualification at HND level or higher.  You must be confident using and interpreting maps. A high level of computer literacy including GIS  is essential. An interest in landscape and social history of England would be an advantage.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C1: Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly. Only a conceptually difficult subject can hinder a natural, smooth flow of language.
