Job Details

Royal Borough of Greenwich is hiring a Head of Data into our Digital Group.

Here at Royal Borough of Greenwich we recently published our first digital strategy, and our long-term investment plan is due to be agreed this month. To make that strategy into a reality, we need to hire a new digital, data and technology team to join our existing skill set. We're starting by hiring four new heads of service, for data, delivery, product, and technology. This role is for our Head of Data.

Data is a huge opportunity for the council and the borough - this role has real potential to shape our plans for data. We already know that we want to make strides across the full range of data activities, from improving our corporate data, to building data skills, opening up our performance, building service analytics, and much more. We're looking for the right person to help us shape those plans and make them real. As Head of Data, you will be responsible for:

  • Data architecture and strategy
  • Data science
  • Data engineering
  • Data analysis and analytics
  • Reporting and business intelligence
  • You will also need to build a data team and community across the range of skills for which you're responsible, as well as acting as an ambassador across the council for the potential that data has. We're looking for someone who's comfortable working with very senior stakeholders and who is able to develop ambitious plans for how data could help the council to modernise.

We're looking for highly experienced digital and technology professionals, with a range of experience in the industry over a number of years. Having worked in the public sector before is a nice to have, but not essential. We're seeking people who care deeply about building great teams, and who want to see others succeed. You will need to be committed to public service and to meeting resident and staff need. You will need to believe in building an inclusive culture, in taking our work seriously but ourselves less so, and in being generous with your time and skills.

We actively encourage applications from under-represented groups and from people who need some flexibility in their role due to parenting or caring arrangements. Because of the responsibility of this role, the minimum time commitment would need to be 30 hours per week. At the moment, the role will be 100% remote working. As the covid pandemic abates, we would like you to work partly from the office and partly from home.

We're excited about the opportunities that this role offers. You will be part of our new digital leadership team, and will make a huge difference to the lives of our residents and staff. In return, we offer a range of benefits which include:

  • Annual Season Ticket Loan
  • Childcare Voucher Scheme
  • Learning and development opportunities to maximise your potential, including excellent apprenticeship opportunities at all levels
  • Reduced rate Gym Membership
  • Eyecare Vouchers
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Long Service Awards
  • Generous Annual Leave entitlement and
  • Excellent Pension Scheme
  • GreenwichCard which entitles you to discounts at local businesses
  • Employee Assistance Scheme including external counselling service
  • A range of flexible working arrangements
  • Staff networks
  • With offices based in the heart of Woolwich, Royal Greenwich is a great place to live and work.

Benefiting from excellent transport links ranging from buses and tubes to trains and ferries, along with the developing Crossrail expansions, Royal Greenwich is one of the easiest boroughs to get to and navigate your way around. It takes 21 minutes to get into central London and 10 minutes from The O2. At the moment, all staff are based at home unless they need to physically be in the office.

    Diversity and inclusion

Royal Borough of Greenwich values the diversity of its community and aims to have a workforce which reflects that. Demonstrating respect and fairness is at the heart of our staff values and comes into all aspects of our work. We are always looking for ways we can make Royal Borough of Greenwich an inclusive, diverse and welcoming place to work. Our offer to employees includes flexible working, a successful council-wide mentoring programme, opportunities for learning and development to maximise your potential, and access to our established staff support networks.

We pride ourselves on being recognised as a great employer under the Mayor's Good Work Standard, a proud Stonewall Diversity Champion, a Disability Confident Employer and an Armed Forces Covenant Employer. In December 2020, Royal Borough of Greenwich also signed The Prince's Responsible Business Network's Race at Work charter, which commits to actioning steps to ensure that ethnic minority employees are represented at all levels of the organisation.

We would therefore like to actively encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

If you are interested in applying for any of these roles, we would love to hear from you.

Royal Borough of Greenwich reserves the right to close any vacancy earlier than the advertised closing date should there be a high volume of applications received.
