Birmingham sits at the heart of the West Midlands metropolitan area, which is home to over 3 million people. The city’s highways are extensive and varied, ranging from the busy arterial routes and connections to the motorway network, such as the A38 Aston Expressway, through vibrant local centres and secondary routes to residential and suburban streets. Our highway asset portfolio is large and complex, with many interfaces with road users and equipment situated within the highway.

We currently have two exciting Principal Asset Engineer vacancies to be filled in our Highways and Infrastructure Division to support our highways and infrastructure asset management.

As a Principal Asset Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work within the Highways Services team with a focus on managing the footway crossing service, asset management planning, involvement with infrastructure projects, city developments and assisting with the delivery of the council’s statutory obligations as a highway authority. You will be expected to understand and work within the council policies and procedures.

As a lead specialist you will manage projects and programmes of both a strategic and local significance to the council, undertaking programme development, delivery, management, co-ordination and control of capital and revenue schemes. You will support and influence initiatives in the development of council policies and strategies for highways asset management.

Your role will involve working with third party scheme promoters, private developers and other public sector bodies in terms of the full range of transportation, traffic, highway management, safety and civil engineering functions.

You will need to be experienced with highway and infrastructure safety requirements in accordance with Construction Design and Management 2015 regulations. You will be expected to use your experience in managing teams and supporting the training of professional development for staff.

Interviews for this post will take place virtually via video conferencing. Shortlisted candidates will be provided with further information.
