In the North East of England and part of the wider Tees Valley region, Darlington is a market town that marries a rich industrial heritage with a modern, vibrant and growing economy. Benefitting from superb transport connectivity, Darlington is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live and work, a proud and innovative town.

Our vision as a Council is to make Darlington a place where people want to live and businesses want to locate, where the economy continues to grow, where people are happy and proud of the borough and where everybody has the opportunity to maximise their potential. Like all Local Authorities, we are not without challenges, but we have developed innovative solutions, created new partnerships and delivered sustainable services.

We have an excellent team, a progressive growth agenda, with a very exciting forward programme. Following the promotion of the existing post holders, we have a fantastic opportunity to appoint three innovative and forward-thinking leaders to join our team and drive our exciting agenda forward.

As the Council’s Deputy Section 151 officer, you will be the lead finance practitioner. A CCAB qualified accountant and reporting to the Director of Operations, you will provide strategic leadership and direction across a range of business support services including Finance, Human Resources, Health and Safety, internal audit and transactional HR and finance services which are run by our partners Xentrall Shared Services.

You will inherit an experienced team with a clear record of robust financial management, strong workforce relations and a commitment to health and safety led from the top.

You will be a key member of the directorate’s senior management team and be expected to support the Director in ensuring the Operations Group and the Council overall have a strong focus on value for money, using available resources well and achieving good outcomes for the Council.

We are looking for a highly motivated, qualified and experienced local government finance professional with good strategic vision and substantial operational experience who can think beyond finance boundaries, a creative thinker who challenges where appropriate, supports where needed and understands the importance of our resources both from a financial and workforce perspective.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented individual with aspirations to become a director, who can demonstrate the ability and personal qualities that are needed to lead the services to the next level.
