About us

Here in Sutton, we have a strong track record of delivering essential frontline services. We have a clear vision, and ambitious plans for our community and for the environment. Everything we do is underpinned by shared values which promote our reputation as a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

Sutton is a great place to live and work, with low crime, exceptional schools, a strong environmental record and good community engagement. We’re hugely ambitious for our borough and the people who live there, and we have exciting plans for our future. We’ve been told we’re quietly brilliant, but now is the time to get loud.

Success is only possible with the support of diverse local, regional, national and international partners, you’ll therefore be a skilled ambassador for the Council, building vital public and private sector relationships. Strong, visible and credible, you’ll know how to connect with partners and unlock substantial investment through influencing these partners and stakeholders in both the private and public sector, nationally and internationally, to deliver a strategic approach to the response to the climate emergency and attracting new businesses and actively marketing Sutton as a high-quality business destination of choice.

The role

Reporting to the newly-appointed Strategic Director, you’ll play a key role in the collective leadership of both the Council and the new Environment, Housing & Neighbourhoods Directorate and Council.

You’ll provide leadership and support, encourage innovation and smart working, manage the performance of the service, and secure the best outcomes for our residents. Specifically, your functional responsibilities will cover:

  • Responses to the climate emergency
  • Waste and street cleaning
  • Parks and grounds maintenance
  • Parking enforcement
  • Community safety
  • Emergency planning and business continuity
  • Performance reporting for the directorate

About you

We’re looking for a committed leader with a proven track record of senior management in a Local

Authority or similar setting. You think differently and apply innovative, creative solutions to strategic challenges. You have the financial skills to deliver efficiency, the confidence to work autonomously at a senior strategic level, and the ability to instil confidence in others.

You’ll work alongside elected members, Government departments, partners and key stakeholders including residents, businesses, partner organisations and other public services, so you’ll need excellent communication and interpersonal skills too.

We’re looking for a truly exceptional, engaging leader with excellent communication skills who shares our ambitious plans for the future of our place, its environment and people. If you can inspire staff and partners in these difficult times, we’d love to hear from you.
