Group Head of Law & Governance (Monitoring Officer)

Employer
Arun District Council
Location
England
Salary
£71,468 - £74,355
Closing date
12 Apr 2021

Those of us working in local government are privileged to have a vibrant democratic tradition at the heart of everything we do. The knowledge that we’re working within statute to implement the social vision of engaged, passionate elected members is what keeps many of us going through the toughest patches – the past year included. And our new Group Head of Law & Governance (Monitoring Officer) will play a vital role in supporting members to take good, sound decisions, turning deeply-held principles into strategies and policies that will improve our beautiful district for everyone. Working closely – and on a daily basis – with the Chief Executive and five political Group Leaders, you’ll provide professional legal and electoral advice and guidance that underpins our strong governance and scrutiny frameworks. It’s a fluid, stimulating working environment, and you’ll be a visible and respected member of the Senior Management Team. While some of the issues on which you advise may be complex, the professional and personal satisfaction of being right at the heart of a vibrant local democracy is uniquely rewarding.

Candidates will have a highly sophisticated grasp of governance, electoral and democratic law, and the procedures of local government (Including FOI and GDPR). In addition, we’re looking for experience of building and sustaining effective relationships with a range of different – and sometimes dissenting – stakeholders. Your high professional credibility and demonstrable personal integrity will be critical to successfully gaining and holding trust across the council and beyond.
