About Us:

Helping tourism and hospitality thrive as part of our communities

In Kensington and Chelsea, we have an ambitious Council Plan which sets out our priorities for the next four years. It is directly shaped by the Council’s biggest ever ‘conversation’ with residents and puts community involvement at its heart. Embedding lessons from the Grenfell tragedy and recovering from the pandemic will be top priorities. We’re working to ensure Kensington and Chelsea emerges stronger from these uniquely challenging times.

We want to ensure a good quality of life for our residents while supporting the recovery of vital hospitality and tourism businesses. This is particular demanding in the most country’s densely populated borough, where residential and licensed premises are in close proximity.

The Role:

If you are interested in licensing law, Kensington and Chelsea is one of the most challenging locations in which to practise. We are also a Bi-borough Service, so you will be working on Westminster City Council cases as well. Our cases often have a high media profile and broader corporate and political implications. You will join a team of lawyers providing high-level legal and procedural advice to Members and Officers on a wide range of licensing matters. This will include the weekly Licensing Committee, as well as licensing appeals in the Magistrates’ Courts and Case Management Hearings.

You will also advise on highway matters including highway status queries, judicial reviews and statutory appeals. This is therefore also an opportunity to build expertise in highways law as part of a supportive team environment, where knowledge and experience are freely shared.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information

About You:

Decisive and confident you’ll be ready to advise council members on licensing issues, often at quite pressurised hearings. Additional knowledge of highway, street trading and asset-of- community-value cases would be an advantage. As an experienced solicitor or barrister, ready to lead your own cases with the minimum of supervision, you will have extensive experience of providing complex legal and procedural advice, most likely in a local authority context. Your excellent drafting and IT skills, your exceptional powers of communication and negotiation, and your ability to adapt to different challenges, will all ensure a good fit with this busy, high-performing team.

In return, you can look forward to a package that includes a competitive salary, a high-quality pension scheme and generous annual leave plus bank holidays.

Please apply online explaining how you meet the requirements set out in the person specification and job description. CV’s will not be considered for this role.

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of suitable applicants.
