Job Details

As we start planning our post-Covid and post-Brexit environment, we have many opportunities as well as challenges to address. One thing is certain, we will need to adapt and keep our finger on the transformation button to  ensure customer focus and fairness is at the heart of everything we do. We are making progress towards our long term vision for the area, and we intend to continue on that road.

West Berkshire benefits from being an excellent place in which to live, work, and learn, with beautiful countryside, bustling towns, culture, sport and heritage on our doorstep. We share the prosperity of the South East with the culture and life style of the South West.  A recent official Health index stated West Berkshire is the 4th healthiest place and 2nd happiest place to live in England. Other surveys put Berkshire as the 8th most prosperous county in England and West Berkshire has the second lowest unemployment rate in the county. We must continue to maintain these standards as we face the future.

Standing still and always doing things the same way is not an option. We’ll continue to assist economic growth, continue to upgrade our infrastructure,  encourage employers, inspire our young people with employment opportunities; create services that protect the most vulnerable and provide safe towns and support well-being for all our residents.

We want to be an organisation that reflects what a modern local authority should look like. This is a great opportunity for a visionary, ambitious individual who is strategic in their thinking to take their next step into the role  as Chief Executive for West Berkshire Council and to help us realise our aspirations.

You will need to lead by example and empower and inspire those around you. You will have an understanding of what reforms are required in the public sector and a desire to position the Council to work with others at regional and national level, to make new connections and strengthen our existing partnerships to make this happen.

If you have been thinking about your future and the future of local government, we are interested in hearing from you.

If you think you have what it takes to fulfil this role, please contact our retained consultants at Gatenby Sanderson; Nancy Scott (07984 172291), Jon Houlihan (07736 821 079) or Tim Hills (07393 011 130) or please click apply below.

Closing Date for applications is 7th May 2021.

* This appointment and salary are subject to Council approval.
