About us

At Essex County Council, what we do impacts the lives of over 1.4 million residents. We work hard to meet our residents' needs - from protecting children to helping vulnerable residents remain independent, improving quality of life through better services, and unlocking economic opportunities across our towns and cities. We need people who are dedicated to helping others in all kinds of ways. That's where you come in.

About the role

Essex County Council is delivering Travel Training for the London borough of Ealing, therefore this role will be based within Ealing and surrounding boroughs.

You will be leading a small team of Travel Trainers working throughout the Ealing area and surrounding boroughs to establish and maintain a new Travel Training service. You will create and maintain key links within schools, professionals, Local Authority officers and ensuring your team stay focussed and have support when needed.

You'll work one-to-one with people who have special educational needs (SEN), physical disabilities and learning disabilities, delivering travel training that helps them become independent travellers and live richer, more fulfilling lives.

Through home visits, tailored journey planning and high-quality road safety training, you'll help your clients build invaluable confidence, allowing them to travel alone and gain the huge range of benefits that travel brings. At the same time, we'll give you many opportunities to develop and broaden your own skillset, too.

You'll also be responsible for generating your own referrals and managing your own schedule, so being driven and well-organised are essential. Although you'll be primarily based in Ealing, the role does involve travelling around Essex and beyond. As such you'll either need a full driving license or the ability to travel long distances through other means.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

We're looking for exceptional communicators with line management responsibilities and significant experience working in a SEN or adult social care setting. You'll be able to instil confidence in others and build rapport with all kinds of people.

You'll also be well-organised, have good IT skills and be educated to A-level (or equivalent). You should have a good knowledge of bus/train services and associated issues for people with SEN. You might also have some knowledge of independent travel training, but this isn't essential.

A DBS check is mandatory for all our roles. You'll also receive first aid training if you don't have a first aid certificate already.

If you have any questions or would like more information about this role, please contact: Jonathan Bloomfield, Travel Training Manager - email:

As part of employment with Essex County Council should your role require a DBS check you will be required to register with the DBS update service. The DBS update service ensures all registered DBS certificates are kept up to date and allows authorised parties to view the status of your certificate. This is an annual subscription and you will be responsible for ensuring this is maintained. For further information on the DBS update service please visit: https://www.gov.uk/dbs-update-service
